PlayStation’s latest State of Play showcase for September 2025 is in the can. The 35-minute presentation revealed a slew of new PS5 games, confirmed PlayStation-branded desktop speakers (I definitely didn’t see that one coming), and announced a limited-edition God of War DualSense.

I’ve seen a few grumblings online about it being a lacklustre State of Play — especially compared to the most recent Nintendo Direct — but I felt it was a pretty darn strong digital event. I mean, any showcase that includes Insomniac Games’ long-gestating Wolverine game emerging from the shadows is a winner in my books. The fact that we also got our best look yet at Returnal’s spiritual successor, Saros, just added to my hype factor.

If you missed State of Play September 2025, you could opt to rewatch the full showcase over on YouTube, or to save you some time, I’ve collected together the five biggest announcements down below. And we’ve also got a complete State of Play September 2025 recap, covering everything single announcement, including Deux Ex Remastered, Nioh 3 and loads more.

5 biggest announcements at State of Play

Saros

PlayStation confirmed ahead of time that Saros would be featured at this State of Play presentation, and it proved to be the show opener. Developed by Housemarque, Saros is essentially a follow-up to Returnal, with the developer promising to take the cinematic, fast-paced bullet hell gameplay of its excellent 2021 sci-fi action game up a notch, which sounds awesome and a little frightening for my thumbs.

This glimpse at Saros gameplay was a little brief for my taste, but it’s certainly got my anticipation levels rising, and we got a release date as well: March 20, 2026.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024

Even with Xbox first-party games on PS5 becoming the norm, I still find it a little jarring seeing the Xbox Game Studios logo at a PlayStation event. After several online leaks, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is now confirmed to be landing on PS5 on December 8. Offering a digital recreation of the entire globe, Microsoft Flight Sim 2024 is basically the gold standard for the genre, and I’m sure aviation enthusiasts who don’t own a powerful enough PC rig (or an Xbox console) will be delighted to see this one arriving on PS5.

During the PS5 generation, Sony has significantly expanded its accessory and peripheral lineup, launching its first Pro-style controller, and with a bespoke fight stick on the way too. The latest addition to the collection is the Pulse Elevate Wireless Speakers. While these will work with PS5, based on the slick trailer, they are designed with desktops in mind, and Sony notes they offer “ultra-low latency, lifelike gaming audio.” The Pulse Elevate speakers are also adjustable, pack a rechargeable battery (for portable use) and include a microphone. These are set to launch sometime in 2026.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of PlayStation’s beloved God of War series, and to celebrate, Sony has created another limited-edition DualSense controller. Okay, so it’s not the remastered collection of the original trilogy fans have been hoping for, but it’s still a nifty piece of merchandise with a striking red stripe overlaid on a white PS5 pad. The minimalist design has proved fairly divisive online, but I quite like it. When it comes to special edition controllers, sometimes less is more. The real sticking point is the $85 price point. However, if you’re undeterred by the hefty cost, the controller launches on October 23, with pre-orders on October 3.

Wolverine

When Saros opened the show, I was confident Sony had something significant in its locker for the closer, and I was not disappointed. After being announced four years ago in September 2021, Insomniac’s Wolverine finally returned with our first look at gameplay. I feared the Spider-Man dev might opt for a more teen-friendly take on the famously angry comic book character, but within seconds of the trailer, Logan has already jammed his metal claws into several skulls. It looks seriously violent, exactly how it should be (Wolverine is not a T-rated hero). Sadly, we didn’t get a firm release, but Insomanic at least offered a “fall 2026” window and promised more details to follow in a dedicated Wolverine State of Play scheduled for next spring.
