I also added the HWiNFO add-on skin to view my hardware information at a glance. But you can add whatever widget you want to enhance your desktop's skin.

A simple theme with helpful functions and visuals

If I don’t want a ton of visuals that Neon Space provides, I will change it to the easier Inside Dream skin. It is elegant and includes essential elements that others offer, like time, date, and weather. However, it also includes a toolbar that allows me to access Office tools, such as Excel and Word, or Photoshop CC when needed. There’s also an optional music visualizer that’s cool to use when playing music. It also includes shortcuts to launch Google Chrome and essential default system directories, such as Downloads and This PC.

4 Aemstel

Basic details with customizable block fonts

The Aemstel skin is an excellent choice if you want a simple skin that displays links to the essential tools you need, such as email, Facebook, and a media player. It also comes packed with the time, date, weather conditions, and system stats. The default background is black, which looks good out of the box, but like all Rainmeter skins, you can customize it to your heart's content. I like straightforward skins like this, as they provide what I want without all the extra eye candy. However, there are times when I like to change things up.

A minimalist skin with plenty of tools

Speaking of a dark and simple Rainmeter skin, this one is a great choice to load up at night when I don’t want glaring blue light coming from my screen. The layout is simple, with plenty of tools I can use to keep track of system utilities. It also features a widget that allows note-taking and a search field right on the desktop. Like others, it includes the time, weather, and a music player that I can set to whichever one I am using, such as Foobar2000, which I use to play local FLAC files. By the way, I mentioned Rainmeter is free, and you can find skins and themes on its site, DeviantArt, and other places online. Or, if you are a graphics artist and know a thing or two about coding, you might want to create your own skin, theme, or background.

For Star Trek fans

I am a massive fan of Star Trek and find this one to be a lot of fun. If you have watched the Trek universe, you know about the LCARS layout on the Enterprise, Voyager, and other ships. This skin includes panels from TNG, TOS, and Klingon ships that you can load.

In addition to its appearance, it features the sounds you are accustomed to hearing while crew members access files and navigate the ship by pressing a lot of buttons. It’s not just something to play with, either. It is actually helpful as it includes access to your files, apps, weather, media, system tools, and more. It’s a must-have for Trekkies.

Tons of tools and system stats in a clean, futuristic look

Sometimes I like to use this one to give my desktop a more futuristic and minimalist look. It has several skins that include my PC and network stats, weather, time, date, a music player, a notepad for sticky notes, and more. It also provides me with access to essential Windows directories, such as Documents, Downloads, This PC, and more. While there are several features, it isn’t as busy as you’d think, especially if you don’t load every available item.

I like being able to customize all of them to look and operate as I like. It takes some trial and error, but once you get the one you are looking for, you’ll wonder why you didn’t use it before. I change up the skins I use during different parts of my day and evening based on my mood, which is possible via the Rainmeter app.
