Apple says its App Store rules have saved users billions

Apple is currently under fire for its App Store practices, with the most prominent recent issue being rules around in-app payment methods. Today the company has outlined the many ways its rules have protected users from attempted fraud, and thus saved those users billions.

Apple writes in its new press release:

Since launching in 2008, the App Store has been a safe and trusted place for users and a vibrant marketplace for developers to grow their businesses around the world. In the last five years, the App Store has protected users by preventing over $9 billion in fraudulent transactions, including over $2 billion in 2024 alone, according to Apple’s annual App Store fraud analysis.

For example, in 2024 alone:

Apple terminated over 146,000 developer accounts over fraud concerns
139,000 developer enrollments were rejected for the same reason
711 million customer account creations were blocked for suspected malicious activity
Over 10,000 illegitimate apps were blocked on pirate storefronts, including “malware, pornography apps, gambling apps, and pirated versions of legitimate apps from the App Store”

The company also says that in the past month alone, nearly 4.6 million attempts to install or launch illicitly distributed apps have been stopped by Apple.
