Nintendo Switch 2 system and camera on table

After years of waiting, the Nintendo Switch 2 is finally here. Lines formed at retailers around the world, eager pre-order holders kept refreshing their tracking page, and at long last, consoles are arriving for gamers. One unlucky buyer picked up the console from their local GameStop, only to unbox it and find that the screen was damaged due to the fact that their receipt was stapled on the outside of the box, and it appears they aren't alone.

Stapler causes screen damage on Switch 2

But the packaging is really the issue

In a since-removed Reddit post, user Konflick posted a series of images showing damage on their Switch 2 screen after picking up the console from their local GameStop. The damage is a result of the receipt being stapled on the outside of the Switch 2 box. Strangely, Nintendo doesn't include any protection for the screen inside the Switch 2 box. The console is at the top of the box, with the screen pressed up against the cardboard on the outside. They aren't the only one, either. User Pozzo4 on the Nintendo Switch subreddit posted an image with similar markings on their screen, noting that the damage was a result of stapling the receipt to the outside of the box.

No-Body-1790, another user who picked up their console at the Staten Island GameStop alongside Pozzo4, also shared images showing gashes on the screen due to the receipt being stapled on the outside of the box. Although this doesn't appear to be a widespread problem, pay careful attention to the box of your Switch 2 if you're picking one up over the next few days. It appears at least some retailers are stapling receipts to the outside of the box.

Although it's disappointing for these few users, the bigger issue is how little protection there is for the screen inside the Switch 2 box. If a staple is enough to penetrate the cardboard and plastic wrap around the console, it's not hard to imagine how else the console could be damaged. Systems have been stockpiled at retailers for weeks as the release date nears, packaged up on pallets in large stacks. If you see any damage on the front of your Switch 2 box, don't be surprised if the screen inside is damaged, as well.

Hopefully, these few incidents are isolated and there isn't a large batch of damaged Switch 2 consoles. Regardless, keep an eye on your Switch 2 box if you're picking one up in the next few days.
