  • "Smarter Context Awareness" improves Copilot functionality

While there are some worthy competitors to Microsoft's spreadsheet application, Excel remains the leading performer in terms of both popularity and the number of features it offers. And it continues to get better, with Microsoft adding a plethora of new features to Excel every month. Not only that, but the company also highlights everything it adds to Excel, which is super convenient for tracking what's new.

Now that we're approaching the end of June, Microsoft has come up with all the key features it added to Excel in June 2025, just like it does in the final days of every month. Like many previous months, the June release includes a couple of key Copilot features for Excel. In addition, the software giant has also added several handy new Excel features for mobile users.

What's new for Excel for Windows, Mac, and Web

One of the noteworthy features Microsoft added to Excel this month is what Microsoft calls "Smarter Context Awareness for Copilot for Excel." This means you no longer need to select the cell to ask queries about the data, as Copilot will now be able to infer what dataset you're talking about from the prompt that you type. You'll also see the visual highlights of the inferred table to give you clarity on which table it used to answer your query.

Since it can now show results based on what you type, the better the prompt, the greater the chances of Copilot nailing it. This smart context awareness feature of Copilot in Excel will be useful, particularly when your workbooks have multiple sheets and tables.

Another handy new addition to Excel is "Value Tokens." This capability will show an icon, representing a data type, next to the value. This will help you quickly differentiate between different data types. To use the feature, select Data > Data Types, and then select the data type you want.

These two new features are available for Mac, Windows, and web users. Additionally, Microsoft has also added the ability to generate the formula by using "=" anywhere on the grid or in the formula bar, followed by typing what you want to generate. This is currently rolling out to all web users.

What's new for Excel for mobile

Microsoft also added a couple of powerful features for Excel mobile clients, including Android and iOS. If you're an Android user, you can now open shared Excel files on your phone without even signing in. However, this works when you only want to view the spreadsheet. For editing and commenting, you'll need to sign in with your Microsoft account. However, this is currently limited to Insiders. However, if you're an iPhone user, Excel now lets you find the template by typing keywords in the Excel app. Again, this is also limited to Insiders.

Excel features that Microsoft is currently testing with Insiders may not always work the way you'd like. If that's the case with the above-mentioned ones, you can visit the dedicated Feedback portal here and let Microsoft know the issues you're facing. You can also submit what new features you want to see in Excel in future updates.
