Summary
- Microsoft is developing a tool to make Windows migration easier.
- The tool will transfer data between two computers on the same Wi-Fi network.
- The feature may be particularly useful for those transitioning from Windows 10 to Windows 11 before the end-of-support date.
Getting a new PC is always exciting, but remembering that you have to move all of your stuff over to your new drive can really dampen that. Fortunately, Microsoft has been working on a way to make it easier to set up your new PC. On the Dev branch, we're seeing the Redmond giant develop a tool that should make moving onto a new computer a lot easier.
Microsoft is working on making Windows migration easier

This new feature comes to us via PhantomOfEarth on X, a name you've likely seen plenty of times if you're a big Windows news fan. If this is the first time you're meeting them, they take a peek inside the latest Windows 11 Beta, Dev, and Canary builds to see what Microsoft is up to. Sometimes, they even dig up hidden features not yet intended for our eyes, because taking a peek at stuff, no matter how work-in-progress it is, is always fun.
This time, Phantom showed off the new Windows Migration flow from the latest Dev build. From the looks of the screenshots, it looks like it'll be a really handy tool if it works properly. It seems all you need to do is get both computers on the same Wi-Fi network, start up the transfer tool on both sides, then enter a code.
I'm curious to see if Microsoft plans to also add this feature to Windows 10. After all, with the operating system's end-of-support date coming, people are likely going to be migrating over from Windows 10 to Windows 11 en-masse, and this tool looks like just the thing they need. Well, that is unless they want to migrate over to Linux instead.
