While we love our Raspberry Pi projects here at XDA, sometimes you don't want the whole Pi; sometimes you just want a slice. Such is the case for people who purchase the individual microcontrollers you can find on the Raspberry Pi for their bespoke projects. And while the microcontrollers are a fantastic way to add a teeny-tiny brain to whatever you like, it doesn't come with either a WiFi or Bluetooth adapter. Instead, you need to hook it up to an adapter yourself.

If you're on the hunt for an adapter to use with your Raspberry Pi microcontroller, look no further than the Radio Module 2. It's a brand new adapter that adds wireless communication capabilities to your chip, and best of all, it will barely make a dent in your wallet.

The Raspberry Pi Radio Module 2 goes on sale for just $4

As spotted by our lovely sister site HowToGeek, Raspberry Pi is now selling the Radio Module 2 for the low, low price of $4. It's mostly intended to work alongside the individual microprocessors you'll find on a Raspberry Pi board, like the RP2040 and RP2350. The Raspberry Pi usually supplies its own wireless adapter, so this is a great way to fill in the blank if you decide to go for the basics instead.

Here's how Raspberry Pi describes the module in a blog post:

As our RP2040 and RP2350 customers go to scale, they often ask us for a wireless solution which provides software and feature-set compatibility with Raspberry Pi Pico-series devices.

We designed Radio Module 2 with these customers in mind. It features castellated edge pads and an on-board 2.4GHz antenna for ease of design and assembly, and a low-pin-count SPI host interface which makes efficient use of the host CPU’s I/O budget. Its compact 16.5mm × 14.5mm form factor and minimal external component requirements (just a host CPU and power) drive down mass-production costs. And, like all our recent Raspberry Pi computers, Radio Module 2 comes with full modular certification, making it an ideal choice for designers who wish to avoid the tricky and expensive radio certification process.

Raspberry Pi goes on to say that the module features "1x1 single-band 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n)" alongside Bluetooth 5.2, and you can use both Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth Low Energy on it. So, if you're on the hunt for those, the Radio Module 2 sounds like a solid choice.

You can check out the Radio Module 2's datasheet for more information on how it works. Or, if you're ready to grab one yourself, Raspberry Pi already has them for sale in its store and among its trusted retailers. Either way, we can't wait to see what people cook up with this.
