Someone is turning their M4 Mac Mini into a portable all-in-one computer, and it's pretty awesome

Summary

  • A portable M4 Mac Mini complete with a monitor and keyboard has been created, providing a travel-friendly computer setup.
  • The device combines the Mac Mini with a monitor and Magic Keyboard, assembled into a laptop-like setup using 3D modeling and printing.
  • Though it still relies on mains power, potential plans to create a battery-powered version are on the horizon, making it even more portable for users.

The M4 Mac Mini is pretty tiny, but how would you feel about bringing it with you as you travel? Well, it turns out that some people don't just want to make their M4 Mac Mini a portable computer; they want the rest of the desktop to come with it, too.

Such is the case of this portable M4 Mac Mini. Sure, the device itself is pretty "portable" as-is, but this project takes it once step further by adding a keyboard and a monitor into the mix. And while it doesn't quite run off of mains power just yet, it feels like it's only a matter of time.

The portable M4 Mac Mini makes the device truly travel-friendly

As spotted by Hackster, this cool idea is Scott Yu-Jan's pet project on YouTube. It combines the M4 Mac Mini alongside a 1920x720 monitor and a Magic Keyboard. The latter two are roughly the same size, which allows them to neatly fold into one another like a laptop. However, because the screen is heavier than the keyboard, Scott added the M4 Mac Mini to the side of the keyboard to keep everything from tipping over.

Once he had the basic idea down, Scott began assembling the case using a combination of 3D modelling and printing, alongside parts like screen hinges. And because the screen Scott picked out has speakers on the back, he doesn't even need additional hardware to hear what's going on. Very cool.

Its main downside is that the M4 Mac Mini still needs to be attached to the mains. Scott said that it shouldn't be too much of a problem if you're taking the Mac Mini to somewhere like a coffee shop, as they usually have a free outlet you can plug into. However, he does have some ideas as to how he can make the setup battery-powered, so it's worth keeping an eye on his channel if you want to see him potentially make a second version that's a lot more portable.

Unfortunately, it seems his choice of placement for the M4 Mac Mini riled the feathers of some commenters. Given how Scott is right-handed, people pointed out that he should have put the M4 Mac Mini on the left side, allowing for more room to move the mouse around. And I have to give it to them; I kind of agree. However, as a base idea, I think Scott knocked this concept out of the park with this one. Good on you.
