FRISCO, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl wide receiver CeeDee Lamb could miss three to four weeks with a high left ankle sprain suffered in Sunday's loss to the Chicago Bears, according to a source.
Speaking on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, executive vice president Stephen Jones said, "I think we've got to evaluate the full thing and see how he's moving around as the day goes. Certainly, he's got a high ankle sprain and every one of those are different. We'd love to have him back for Green Bay but at the same time we also got to understand the injury is what it is and we'll play it out."
The Cowboys play the Green Bay Packers Sunday at AT&T Stadium, followed by games at the New York Jets (Oct. 5) and Carolina Panthers (Oct. 12) and a home game Oct. 19 vs. the Washington Commanders. If the Cowboys put Lamb on injured reserve, he would miss the next four games.
After the game, Lamb said, "For sure. Absolutely," when asked if it was something he could play through, and he was not in a protective boot. He had an MRI on Monday morning.
Lamb entered the Chicago game with consecutive 100-yard receiving games to open the season. He played just six snaps against the Bears and did not have a catch. He has missed just three games in his career. He missed one in 2021 with a concussion and two last year with a shoulder injury after the Cowboys were officially eliminated from playoff contention.
Lamb, who opened the season with consecutive 100-yard efforts, suffered the injury with 8:34 left in the first quarter on a carry as a running back when linebacker Noah Sewell landed on the back of Lamb's legs, causing the ankle to twist. Lamb missed the next 14 snaps over two series. He returned for the first play of the second quarter and looked to be lumbering when he went in motion.
He said after the game he wanted to return when strength and mobility returned to his ankle, but the medical staff held him out.
George Pickens will become the Cowboys' No. 1 receiver. He has 13 catches for 166 yards and two scores through two games. The Cowboys also have Jalen Tolbert, KaVontae Turpin and Ryan Flournoy on the 53-man roster at the spot.
"It changes quite a bit," Jones said of the offense without Lamb. "When you're able to have both out there, it's a huge plus. Certainly, Pickens can do a great job for us in the role ... I think Turpin's doing a great job for us, but when you got all three of those guys out there, it's a lot for the defense to take a look at. We are running the ball well when we do run it. [Jake] Ferguson's doing a good job there in the middle. But when you miss a player like CeeDee, it certainly makes a difference."
