The first new iOS 18.6 features were just detailed by Apple

iOS 18.6 is currently being beta tested, with a launch expected in the next month or so. Unlike the major iOS 26 update arriving this fall, 18.6 will focus primarily on bug fixes and stability. But Apple has just shared details on two new features coming in iOS 18.6 too—at least for EU users.

Installing apps and marketplaces from the web will get easier with iOS 18.6

Yesterday Apple announced sweeping changes coming to iPhone and iPad users in the EU.

The updates involve App Store-related policies and practices, and will impact both users and developers.

On the user-facing side, there are two changes coming related to app installation.

As detailed on this page, iOS and iPadOS 18.6 will offer a newly updated experience for users who:

  1. Install third-party app marketplaces from the web
  2. or install third-party apps from the web

In both cases, users should have a smoother, less fear-inducing time installing third-party marketplaces and apps directly from the web.

Current versions of iOS make both acts possible, but include warning screens that EU regulators seem to have taken issue with.

Installing a marketplace from the web will now look like this:

When installing a third-party app from the web, Apple will implement a new two-stage disclosure process.

The first time a user tries to install an app from a particular developer, they’ll encounter a lengthier process (outlined here).

But for subsequent installs from that developer, iOS 18.6 will offer a more streamlined experience like this:

Basically, future web installs from a known developer should be just as convenient for users as downloading apps from Apple’s App Store.

Aside from these changes, no other new iOS 18.6 features are currently known. However, it’s possible that the update will bring Apple Intelligence support to China for the first time.

If you’re in the EU, what are your reactions to these new iOS 18.6 features? Let us know in the comments.
