The wait is almost over: Microsoft Teams is finally adding this highly requested feature

1 month ago 2

Summary

  • Microsoft Teams will soon allow multiple emoji reactions per message for a fun and nuanced response.
  • Users have requested this feature for years, and Microsoft plans to release it as a preview in June.
  • The new feature enhances expression capabilities, though the exact number of emojis allowed is unspecified.

Microsoft 365 is arguably the most popular productivity suite, but regardless of your opinion, it's lately been suffering from various issues quite frequently, disrupting users' workflow. For example, last month, Microsoft Teams momentarily prevented users from sharing files. While issues like these are usually fixed within a few hours, Microsoft can take months or even years to address what users ask of it, which are mostly feature requests and improvements.

One such feature that many users wanted Microsoft to add to Teams is support for a fun feature that's already available on rival platforms like Slack. Now, following years of requests from several Teams users, the software giant has finally agreed to bring it to Teams as early as next month.

Microsoft plans to take the emoji feature in Teams to the next level

Emoticons make conversations fun, and they're also a quick way to express your feelings about something, which can sometimes be more effective than communicating through text. Currently, this is the state of emojis in Microsoft Teams, but the Redmond tech firm wants to take the experience to the next level by allowing users to react to a single message or a post with multiple emojis.

On its Microsoft 365 Roadmap page (Feature ID: 491468), Microsoft said that the ability to react to messages and posts with multiple emojis enables team members to give a "richer" and "more nuanced response" without extra replies. And since Microsoft Teams has support for tons of emojis, you should be able to express a wide range of emotions effectively. However, the company hasn't specified the maximum number of emojis a person can react with in a single message or post.

It's unclear when Microsoft started working on it, but it's very close to releasing the feature to Teams users. The company is planning to release multiple emoji reactions per message as early as next month. It'll be available as a preview first and then roll out to everyone. Preview and General Availability are both in June, so it's only a matter of a few days before you see the feature in Teams.

Teams users have been asking for it for years. Users posted multiple feature requests on the Feedback portal, asking Microsoft to add the multiple emoji reactions feature. Teams users on the r/MicrosoftTeams subreddit were also complaining about the missing feature.

This long-standing users' demand is now being fulfilled, but don't take the June release for granted, as release timelines on the Microsoft Roadmap page are subject to change. Either way, it's interesting that Microsoft decided to introduce the multiple emoji reactions feature to Teams only after killing off Skype.
