It's not often that we see a paid Steam game go completely free, even for a limited time. However, today is one of those rare days where you can snap up a $40 for the low, low price of nothing. If your wallet is still recovering from the Steam Summer Sale that just ended and you're not in the position to buy any more games, this one will make for a nice freebie.

It's called "Fantasy General II," and if you've never heard of it before, then you're far from alone. It's my first time seeing this game, too, and it came out back in 2019. However, given its current 81% Steam review, it doesn't seem like a stinker, so it may be worth a shot at the very least.

What is Fantasy General II all about?

Fantasy General 2 is a strategy game set in the realm of Aer. At first glance, the game looks like something akin to the Civilization or Total War series, but the fans say it's far more RPG-focused with no base building and a more linear story approach. If you've ever played Battle for Wesnoth, think more along the lines of that game than anything else.

Here's how the game describes itself:

Fantasy General II: Invasion is the reimagination of the strategy game classic from the 90s! Armies once again draw battle-lines on the war-torn land of Keldonia, and a new generation of commanders will test their bravery and tactics against each other. Fantasy wargaming is back!

True to the tradition of the original game, Fantasy General II is all about turn-based battles. Lead over 75 different unique unit types, including powerful heroes.

Take into consideration terrain, weapons and armour, magical effects, morale, and the balance of forces, make a plan, execute it, and vanquish your enemy, forging your reputation as a savage war-leader.

The game is currently free to keep until July 17th. This means that if you head over to the Steam store page and click the "Add to account" button at any time until then, it'll stay in your account forever, even after the deal ends. And given how the game has 81% positive reviews on Steam and an 80% Metacritic score, it's definitely worth a shot if this game sounds like something you'd be interested in.
