The 22nd edition of the World Aquatics Championships is here and will go on from 11 July to 3 August. The 23-day event will be held in Singapore this year, making it the first Southeast Asian nation in the world to host the championships. The global stage will see almost 2500 athletes hit the water across 77 medal events and try to win their first medal or continue their legacy. Contestants from more than 200 nations will compete in events including swimming, diving, high diving, water polo, artistic swimming, and open water swimming to make their mark in the 2025 iteration of the championships.

Where To Watch The 2025 World Aquatics Championships?

Fans in the U.S. will be able to catch the action live on the NBC streaming service Peacock. Aside from this, Team USA TV will be airing preliminaries along with the semifinals of some of the artistic swimming and diving competitions. It should be noted that Team USA TV is a free platform with ads. Fans from Canada will be able to watch the contest on CBC. Local distributors who will be making the action available to fans across Asia and Europe can be found here.

Where Will The World Aquatics Championships Be Held?

As mentioned, Singapore is the host nation for this year’s World Aquatics Championships. The (WCH) World Aquatics Championships Arena, in the Singapore Sports Hub, is a 4,800-seater purpose-built facility, featuring two pools, which was officially unveiled last month, and will host the swimming and artistic swimming events. Two specialized locations will host the championship’s other events.

Athletes participating in high diving and open water swimming will face each other at Sentosa (Palawan Green). Fans will see the events of water polo and diving unfold in the Singapore Sports Hub’s OCBC Aquatic Centre. These venues will also host these events for the World Aquatics Masters Championships.

The Singapore Sports Hub will also have several spots for fan engagement throughout the venue. The mascot for this year’s World Aquatic Championships will be Dewey the Dugong, designed after the native coastal mammal of Singapore. Ollie the Urban Otter is also the event’s mascot.

Diving

China is predicted to maintain its long domination in diving at Singapore. The squad finished the 2024 Worlds with 13 medals, highlighting their unwavering commitment to the sport, before winning all eight diving events in Paris. Olympic champion Yang Hao is now expected to defend his 10-meter synchro world title and claim his second gold medal in the individual 10-meter platform title.

21-year-old Osmar Olvera of Mexico will also continue to challenge China in several events. After claiming two medals at the Paris Olympics, Olvera will defend his world title in 1-meter springboard. At the 2024 Worlds he became the first diver from any country except China to claim the title in nearly 20 years.

After winning a silver medal at Paris, the U.S. has selected a roster of 20 athletes led by coach Eric Best to compete at Singapore. Sophie Verzyl is anticipated to carry the momentum from her success at U.S. Diving Nationals. Anna Kwong and 2024 NCAA champion Lyle Yost will also be intriguing to watch in the 1-meter springboard event.

Water Polo

In men’s water polo, Serbia, a three-time reigning Olympic champion, will be a strong competitor against Hungary and the current world champions, Croatia. For Team U.S., national team head coach Dejan Udovicic has announced a roster of 15 athletes to compete in Singapore. The team has been drawn into Group C and will open their championships on July 11 against Canada. Before each game, 14 eligible athletes will be selected to compete.

On the women’s side, the eight-time world champions, team U.S., after breaking their Olympic win streak in Paris, will be aiming to defend their world title. The roster of 15 athletes, including Amanda Longan, will play their first match against China on July 10. Spain has also shown consistent progress, since building on their bronze medal from the 2024 World Championships to win their first Olympic gold medal in women's water polo in Paris.

Artistic Swimming

The 2025 Worlds will present a significant challenge for the U.S. team in artistic swimming. The U.S. women had won the silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, coming second to the team of China. This was the first-ever team gold for China, and it had surpassed the runner-up U.S. by a big margin of 81 points. After a fantastic World Cup season, China is being projected as an early favorite. Anita Alvarez, who represented the U.S. at the Paris Olympics, will be looking forward to changing the discourse with her team and winning the gold medal. Jaime Czarkowski and Ghizal Akbar will participate in the women’s duet technical event and aim to win it as well.

Swimming

This year the U.S. swim team roster includes top-notch athletes aiming to win their first world title or claim new records. After setting a new world record in the 800 free, Katie Ledecky will be in line to create history and win her seventh world title in the event. Gretchen Walsh, who continues to break records in both long-course and short-course pools, will be eyeing her first individual gold medal in Singapore. After achieving significant success at the U.S. Nationals in June, Luke Hobson and Jack Alexy will aim for podium finishes in freestyle events. Claire Weinstein, who won the 5k title at the U.S. National Open Water Championships, will represent the U.S. in the Open Water Championships.

Leon Marchand, Canada’s Summer McIntosh, and Kaylee McKeown are also expected to compete in the event after skipping the 2024 World Championships.
