Summary

  • Windows 11 Snipping Tool evolves to include a built-in GIF exporter.
  • PhantomOfEarth shares news about the new feature added to the Snipping Tool.
  • GIF export feature allows for quick creation of GIFs from screen recordings in low or high quality.

The Windows 11 Snipping Tool has gone from strength to strength in recent months. Once a humble screenshotting tool, it has since evolved to do pretty much anything, including screen recordings. In fact, we had a lot of nice things to say about it earlier today, after the preview build introduced a smart cropping feature into the mix.

As it turns out, that's not all that's coming to the Snipping Tool. While you can do screen recordings with the tool, you can't export the result as a GIF; instead, you need to use a file converter to make one. Well, we've caught wind that the tool will get a built-in GIF exporter sometime soon, and I'm all for it.

Once again, we owe this piece of news to the wonderful PhantomOfEarth. If you've never heard of them, they're like the initial scout into Windows preview builds. Not only do they check out all the new stuff added in every beta build, but they also sniff out all the things that weren't officially announced and hidden away as works-in-progress. They're an excellent source for taking a sneak peek into what Microsoft is planning, even into areas the company doesn't want people looking into at the time.

Now, they've made a post on X showing off a new feature: GIF exports. It seems it's an add-on to the current recording tool, which lets you export the recording as a low or high-quality GIF instead of a video.

This should definitely save a few clicks when trying to make a GIF of something you're recording on your PC. And if you're still on the fence about this handy tool, check out our editor Adam Conway's reasons he's still using Snipping Tool instead of the technically better alternatives.
