Another Surface device quietly bites the dust, and Microsoft doesn’t want to talk about it

Though a lot of products in Microsoft's Surface lineup have been straight winners, there have been a few that have certainly slipped through the cracks. Unfortunately, the Surface Studio range seems to fall into the latter category. The idea behind the Surface Studio device is essentially a sleek, all-in-one desktop with a touchscreen that doubles as a digital drafting table.

Though the concept is certainly ambitious and has potential, it never quite gelled with Microsoft fans. Now, the tech giant is reportedly killing the Surface Laptop Studio 2, and it might just mark the end of Microsoft’s more experimental Surface ambitions.

According to Tom Warren from The Verge, "sources familiar with Microsoft's Surface plans" reportedly told him that Microsoft halted production of its Surface Laptop Studio 2 earlier this month.

He mentions that the sources claimed no more units are being produced, and ultimately, Microsoft has plans to officially mark the devices as end of life in June of this year. Though Warren noted that he reached out to Microsoft to comment on the end of life of the device, the company declined to formally provide a statement.

While it seems like Microsoft isn't quite ready to formally bid farewell to the device just yet, official Surface resellers didn’t hesitate to discuss the future of the Surface Laptop Studio 2 and confirm that Microsoft has indeed ceased manufacturing for the device. According to The Verge, upon inquiring about the device’s lack of stock, one reseller said:

Surface Laptop Studio 2 has reached end of manufacturing, and availability of supply will be limited and may vary by market going forward.

The reseller went on to say that the tech giant plans to continue supporting the device through driver and firmware updates. This aligns with what Microsoft mentions in its Surface devices driver and firmware lifecycle for Windows-based devices page, which states that Surface devices released after January 1, 2021, will continue to “receive driver and firmware updates for at least six years from when the device was first released.”

In a table under the Surface driver and firmware lifecycle period heading, the Surface Laptop Studio 2’s end-of-servicing date for firmware and drivers is stated as October 3, 2029. Microsoft quietly discontinuing the device isn’t all that surprising, though. Their audio products, the Surface Headphones 2 and Surface Earbuds, disappeared quietly too.

The company also killed off the Surface Studio 2+ in December 2024. Similar to how reseller stock for the Surface Laptop Studio 2 drying up was the only indication of its discontinuation, it was the same story with the Surface Studio 2+. The only difference was that once retailers began to run low on stock, Microsoft ended up confirming that the Studio 2+ wouldn’t be available for new purchases in a statement to Windows Central.

Nonetheless, the Surface Laptop Studio 2 being discontinued too is just another indication that Microsoft has no plans to make a follow-up to the device.
