I switched to this privacy-focused cloud storage instead of Google Drive — here’s why you should too

4 hours ago 2

For years, Google Drive was my go-to cloud solution for everything — work documents, personal files, family photos, you name it. The ease of use and seamless integration with Google's ecosystem were unbeatable. However, I eventually became uncomfortable knowing that Google scanned and analyzed every file I stored.

Apart from that, headlines about data breaches, privacy scandals, and concerns about data mining pushed me to uninstall Google Drive and reconsider my choices. Trading privacy for convenience no longer seemed like a fair deal, so I began searching for a safer, more privacy-respecting alternative. That's when I came across this amazing tool — Filen.

6 of the best open source backup options

If you're not already backing up your systems, here's where to start.

What is Filen?

A cloud storage service that's serious about privacy

Starting Filen

Filen is an open-source, end-to-end encrypted cloud storage service headquartered in Germany. Unlike Google Drive or other popular cloud services, it employs zero-knowledge encryption, meaning all your files are encrypted on your device before they are ever uploaded to the cloud. This ensures that only you can access your data. Not even Filen itself has the capability to view or access your files, providing absolute privacy and peace of mind.

Filen is not just a simple cloud storage platform. It comes with additional useful features, including notes, chats, auto-file syncing, mounting a network drive, and more.

Switching was way easier than I thought

Getting started with Filen

When I decided to try Filen, the process turned out to be surprisingly simple. Creating an account requires only your email address and verification, respecting user privacy right from the start. I first tried it on my browser and then installed its Windows application. It is also available on Android, iPhone, and iPad.

After installing the desktop application, I uploaded a single PDF file to test it. Everything immediately felt familiar, reminiscent of Dropbox or Google Drive — but with the critical benefit of end-to-end encryption and enhanced security.

The features that make me stick with Filen

End-to-end encryption & zero-knowledge policy

Filen encrypts your files locally, meaning they never leave your device without being encrypted. This gives me incredible peace of mind, knowing that my data is truly private and secure. I can store my family photos and other sensitive data without worrying that the platform will access them.

File versions

Filen's built-in version control allows me to easily revert to previous versions of files if mistakes or accidental deletions occur. It's a lifesaver when editing important documents.

File sharing that stays private

Secure file sharing is a breeze with Filen. I can set passwords and expiration dates on shared links, ensuring my files remain encrypted even when accessed by others. The catch is that public sharing is unavailable in the free version, but you can still share your files with other Filen contacts.

Built-in notes and chat

The integrated encrypted notes and chat functions are surprisingly useful. I regularly use them for secure note-taking or communication within the Filen app itself.

Add or create contacts

Managing encrypted file sharing and chat within Filen is seamless because there's no need for external contact lists. Everything stays integrated and secure.

Mount network drive

One of my favorite features is the ability to mount Filen as a network drive. It allows for seamless browsing and file management, as though the files were stored directly on my computer.

Create syncing

Automatic syncing across devices works flawlessly, keeping files up to date whether I'm using Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android. Other than that, you can create a sync backup between your PC backup folder and the folder on Filen. It can be a one-way or two-way sync, depending on your choice.

Cross-platform access

I can access my encrypted storage from anywhere — desktop applications, web browsers, and mobile apps — ensuring seamless connectivity on the go.

Open-source & no ads

Filen's source code is publicly available, allowing transparency and trust. Privacy enthusiasts can confirm the absence of hidden trackers and intrusive data collection.

Fair free tier & pricing

Filen offers a generous 10GB of free storage, allowing users to test its features thoroughly. Paid plans are affordable and transparent, free from hidden fees or aggressive upselling.

How I actually started using it

My encrypted vault for work, personal docs, and sharing

After I found it, Filen seamlessly fits into my daily routine:

  • Work files: Sensitive client data and project files are safely backed up with end-to-end encryption.
  • Personal documents: Important documents, such as IDs, tax records, and medical information, are securely stored and instantly accessible.
  • Family photos: Family memories are privately synced across devices without data profiling.
  • Secure sharing: I use encrypted, password-protected links for securely sharing files with clients and family, maintaining privacy.

I've also come to appreciate Filen's Notes feature for secure, encrypted jotting and the convenience of mounting a network drive for smooth browsing.

What you don't get (and why it's fine)

It's not a Google Drive clone

Filen on Web browser

If you are considering replacing Google Drive entirely with Filen, you may feel that many features are missing. Filen doesn't offer real-time collaborative editing like Google Docs, although you can integrate external tools if necessary. Initially, some users may find encrypted share links slightly confusing, requiring brief explanations.

Additionally, there are no built-in calendars or integrations with big tech services. However, these trade-offs are acceptable and even preferable, given the enhanced privacy and security that Filen offers.

Who should try Filen?

It's not just for privacy geeks

Filen is ideal for:

  • Freelancers and remote workers managing sensitive or confidential documents.
  • Small teams and businesses prioritizing data security.
  • Families who want to protect personal documents and photos from big tech data mining.
  • Anyone seeking secure encrypted backups without invasive tracking.

Securely store your files in the cloud

Tech giants shouldn't have a front-row seat to your files

Switching to Filen was more than just choosing a different cloud storage service — it was mostly about reclaiming my privacy without compromising convenience. Filen didn't simply replace Google Drive for me; it fundamentally reshaped my expectations of what cloud storage should be. There's no need to accept "free" storage solutions that exploit user data.

With Filen, I have regained control over my digital privacy, and I can confidently say my personal information isn't for sale.
