Summary
- Microsoft boasts Copilot+ PCs are up to 58% faster than a MacBook Air with M3 chip - but it's outdated.
- Microsoft claims it can beat the Apple M4 chip, but the ad focuses on surpassing outdated laptops.
- Microsoft could impress by focusing on stats from Principled Technologies rather than outdated comparisons.
It has almost been 20 years since the "I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC" advertisements ran, and I don't think Microsoft has ever gotten over them. The company is still trying to get that "haha, gotcha" moment over its rival, and I don't think it has managed after all these years. Take, for example, Microsoft's current stab at Apple's hardware, which takes pleasure in gloating over how its hardware is faster than the M3 chip that released...a year ago.

Microsoft takes pride in its Copilot+ PCs beating year-old Apple products

As spotted by WccfTech, Microsoft uploaded a new advertisement for its COpilot+ devices to its YouTube channel. Titled "We’re faster than a Mac. Here’s how much faster," the video mimics a news report where a reporter claims that "Copilot+ PCs are up to 58% faster than a MacBook Air with M3." They then say "That's right, faster than a Mac" with a huge emphasis on the word "Mac."
There's just one small problem: The M3 came out over a year ago. Since then, Apple has released the M4 chip which is more powerful. This makes the above ad feel like someone boasting about beating an old record someone made a year ago, and has since improved upon since then.
So does this mean that Microsoft forgot that M4 is a thing? Not quite. At the five-second mark, you can see some fine print pointing to a website where Microsoft ran tests with Copilot+ devices versus MacBooks. There, Microsoft makes the more impressive claim that it can beat the M4 chip:
Based on Microsoft-commissioned testing performed by Principled Technologies conducted in May 2024 and September 2024 using Cinebench 2024 Multi-Core benchmark. MacBook Air 15" with Apple M4 10-core CPU tested by Microsoft in April 2025 with a score of 866. [Several Snapdragon X devices] all scored higher than the MacBook Air M4.
Microsoft then points to a Principled Technology website to prove its claims. Honestly, if Microsoft just made an advertisement based on these stats, I would have been a lot more impressed. Instead, we have a company boasting that it can surpass someone else's previous generation of laptops. Sigh.
