Google's AI-powered research assistant, NotebookLM, is undoubtedly one of the best AI tools for productivity out there. Given that the tool is still fairly new, Google’s constantly rolling out new updates and features to improve it. Just two days ago, a leaked internal memo revealed that a lot of the features NotebookLM's been teasing for a while could arrive any day now.
This includes the ability to generate multiple Audio Overviews within the same notebook, the option to share Mind Maps and Audio Overviews with just a single link, and arguably the most exciting: Video Overviews. Now, someone’s spotted a new NotebookLM feature that hasn't been talked about yet, and it might just transform how I study.
Google is quietly testing a flashcards feature inside NotebookLM
As spotted by @testingcatalog via an X (formerly Twitter) post, Google is reportedly working on a Flashcards feature. In a screenshot they shared, the feature appears in the Studio panel alongside the iconic Audio Overviews and the upcoming Video Overviews feature.
When they hovered over it, the following description appeared: Generate AI flashcards based on your sources.
Though @testingcatalog didn't share much about the feature, they believe the flashcards will be interactive and will use AI to “extract key facts or questions from uploaded materials.” I completely agree with this sentiment, since that’s precisely how other NotebookLM features work.

If there’s anything you need to know about me, it’s that I have the memory of a goldfish. I can't retain any information, which means memorization-heavy courses are a nightmare for me. The only studying strategy that’s helped me cope with such subjects is turning notes into flashcards.
Though I’ve played around with AI flashcard tools like Brainscrape and Flashka, they’re not the best at converting your own notes into flashcards. As a result, I’ve stuck to creating my own from scratch, which takes hours. NotebookLM’s Flashcards feature might finally solve this issue for me (and countless students, I’m sure), and I can't wait. I recently wrote about three productivity tools I pair with NotebookLM to boost my workflow, and one of the tools I included was Quizlet.
The powerful combination of NotebookLM and Quizlet makes it easy to generate flashcards from uploaded sources and understand complex material faster. With native flashcard support, NotebookLM might make that extra step unnecessary and I wouldn’t have to keep switching back and forth between NotebookLM and Quzlet just to make flashcards.
Though there’s been no official word about this feature from Google yet, I’ve found @testingcatalog’s news to be quite accurate. They caught Video Overviews in testing days before Google announced it at Google I/O 2025, so I’m inclined to believe them. Of course, it’s still best to take it with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, if the feature ends up rolling out soon, it could be one of NotebookLM's most helpful updates yet, especially for students like me who rely heavily on flashcards to survive exam season.
