This week, Apple TV+ debuts the critically acclaimed third season of sci-fi saga Foundation. But the next new Apple show launching is similarly epic in scope, yet with a very different focus and heavy on Jason Momoa: Chief of War is coming soon.
Chief of War coming to Apple TV+ as new historical epic

Jason Momoa is no stranger to Apple TV+, as he led one of the service’s signature launch series back in 2019: See.
But with Chief of War, the next big Apple TV+ show debuting, Momoa has taken on a much larger role.
The series is co-created by Momoa, but he also serves as its star, executive producer, and even writer.
Chief of War premieres on Friday, August 1 with its first two episodes, followed by weekly releases through September 19.
Here’s Apple’s summary and the brand new trailer:
Set amid the scenic backdrop of the islands of Hawai‘i, the nine-episode series, based on true events, follows warrior Ka‘iana, portrayed by Momoa, as he tries to unify the islands before Western colonization in the late 18th century.
The historical war epic looks broad in scope, but with a deeply personal connection to Momoa himself.
Apple notes: “Told from an indigenous perspective, “Chief of War” is a passion project for creators Momoa and Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett, who share native Hawaiian heritage.”
See wasn’t necessarily the breakout series Apple was hoping for, but the audience and hit rate for Apple TV+ has grown significantly since Momoa’s first outing. As a result, Chief of War seems likely to find greater success.
Apple TV+ is available for $9.99 per month and features hit TV shows and movies like Ted Lasso, Severance, The Morning Show, Silo, and Shrinking.
