This $20 accessory is the best thing I've purchased for my ROG Ally

1 week ago 1

I use my ROG Ally X for more than just gaming, and out of the current crop of PC gaming handhelds, it's by far my favorite. I've upgraded the internal storage for more space, use a bunch of other accessories to get the best experience, and am never far from a fast-charging GaN USB-C charger or battery pack. But there's one thing that really annoys me, and I spent the easiest $20 of my life fixing it.

Oh, the thing? Fingerprints on the touchscreen. I hate them on all my touch-enabled electronics, but for some reason, the ROG Ally X screen doesn't repel those greasy streaks like my phone and other devices manage to. The $20 went on a fantastic screen cleaning gadget called Hans, which needs no power and takes no time at all to make my screen streak-free.

Upgrading the SSD in the Asus ROG Ally X is easier than ever - here's how

With a drive you can find almost anywhere now, in just a few minutes of work, you can increase the storage in your ROG Ally X

I love my ROG Ally X but...

It's a fingerprint magnet at the best of times

The screen on the ROG Ally X is easily the most fingerprint-attracting device I own. The rest of the device is quite good at staying clean, thanks to a hard case that doesn't attract many dust particles. But only a few seconds using the touchscreen makes me want to scrub my fingers with Swarfega because I didn't know they were that oily.

This pocket-sized powerhouse of cleaning gets even the gunkiest touchscreen shining in no time at all.

And due to how hit-and-miss the joystick controls are when in Windows, everything needs me to touch the screen. Updating the handheld, touch. Updating games or installing new ones, touch. Installing new apps, or browsing the internet (especially browsing the internet), touch. It's enough to give me a complex over cleanliness, but it doesn't have to be that way.

It takes seconds to clean the screen with this gadget

That's where Hans comes in. This pocket-sized powerhouse of cleaning gets even the gunkiest touchscreen shining in no time at all. One end features a cleaning solution-infused foam pad with a soft textile outer shell, which breaks up oily fingerprints in just a couple of swipes. Then the other is a soft, folded cloth to wipe off the leftover liquid and polish things to a shine. It's all done in seconds, and I won't be without one. I liked it so much I bought more for the family, so everyone's touchscreens could gleam.

Just look at that shine

I didn't expect to be waxing lyrical about a screen cleaner, either

I'm as surprised as anyone that a simple gadget could live up to the expectations set by its marketing. Except, most of its marketing consists of quotes from other journalists who have used it and loved it. Look, you don't want to use Lysol wipes or bleach or anything else on your screen, it'll take the coatings off. But this little cleaner doesn't damage anything.

It takes a soft touch, however, and whatever you do don't use it on OLED computer monitors. It scared the heck out of me the first time I did, and it took several careful polishing sessions with a mister of distilled water and a microfiber cloth to get the haze off. Maybe that was because the screen was on, and therefore warm, but just don't do it. It's perfect for glass displays, though, so go to town on your gaming handhelds, phones, tablets, and laptops.

And it's economical to use

I've used dozens of ways to clean touchscreens, from sprays to cleaning cloths with different materials on both sides, and none get screens as clean as the Hans. But it's not only easy to use, it's sustainable, as you can refill the cleaning side by filling the lid and letting it sit upside-down overnight to soak back in. The drying side is a long ribbon of soft material, allowing you to unwrap it, move it slightly, and rewrap it to obtain a completely untouched section. Additionally, it's washable once the entire product has been used.

No more throwaway wipes that never really work anyway, no one-use spray bottles that you can't open to refill, no odd cleaning fluid that could damage your screen, and no fibers left behind by the drying cloth. And because of the dual lids, you can carry it in your bag for whenever you need it, without it picking up fluff or dirt while stored.

The ROG Ally X has a ton of obviously good accessories, but this is my favorite by far

PC gaming handhelds, such as the ROG Ally X, have a vast ecosystem of accessories, as anything USB-based should be compatible, with docking stations being a popular choice. Then there's the sea of cases, covers, screen protectors, and external storage solutions, as well as the ability to replace the internal SSD for additional storage space. But for me, being able to keep the screen fingerprint-free is far more fantastic, and I won't be far away from a Hans.
