Summary
- Valve plans to bring SteamOS to more handheld devices with official support.
- Confirmation of more SteamOS-powered devices found in a discreet update to the FAQ page.
- Valve aims to make SteamOS the operating system of choice for various gaming platforms.
After the success of the Steam Deck, Valve hasn't been slacking. For a long time, the company expressed interest that it wanted to bring the Steam Deck's operating system, SteamOS, to other handheld devices too. And we're not talking just giving people the option to use SteamOS: we're talking full, official support from Valve itself.
For a while, things were a little quiet on the SteamOS front, but we're now beginning to see Valve's slow but steady march onto other consoles. And now, the company has confirmed that it's "currently working" with people to make even more, albeit it didn't really announce it with much flair.

Valve confirms that more SteamOS-powered devices are in the works

As spotted by Notebook Check, this update comes to us not via a news announcement or a press release, but instead, a stealthy update to the SteamOS FAQ page. The page, by itself, isn't anything exciting; it's just a quick run down of what the operating system is, what it can do, and how people should use it.
However, tucked away near the bottom is this little gem:
My company is interested in building and selling a device that runs SteamOS – who do I reach out to?
We’re currently working with select partners on officially licensed Powered by SteamOS devices. Please reach out to us at poweredbysteamos@valvesoftware.com for more information about licensing SteamOS for your device.
If the term "Powered by SteamOS" is new to you, we heard about it in December when the first whispers of third-party handheld support for SteamOS came to light. That was around the time we also saw evidence of a "Steam Box" that would rival the Nvidia Shield.
As such, it's pretty safe to say that Valve doesn't intend to sprinkle SteamOS on a handful of consoles and call it a day. It's more likely that the company will push to make SteamOS the operating system of choice for gamers, whether it's a handheld, a streaming box, or even a desktop computer. We'll just have to wait and see what the company has planned with its partners.
