You can now turn your old Switch into the worst iPhone the world has ever seen, if that's your thing

Summary

  • Don't turn your Switch into an iPhone - it takes 20 minutes to boot and can't run apps.
  • Use QEMUAppleSilicon for this (bad) idea of turning your Switch into a terrible iPhone
  • Refurbish your original Switch with new accessories for a better experience.

Do you know what the biggest problem is regarding the original Switch? The internet is full of too much good advice as to what you should do with it after buying the Switch 2. People are saying you should donate it to a loved one, or sell it off, or keep it around as a spare, and they're all perfectly valid pieces of advice, and you should definitely heed them. But we don't have enough outrageous, downright terrible ideas for what you can do with a spare Switch. And we need those for...reasons, I guess.

Well, if you're on the hunt for a way to utterly ruin your original Switch for the sake of science(?), then boy, do I have the idea for you. Someone spent two days trying to install iPhone software on the original Switch, and while you can do it yourself, there's absolutely zero reason why any sane person would want to.

Turning your Switch into an iPhone is an awful idea, much to the surprise of nobody

As spotted by Tom's Hardware, this feat (as useless as it may be, doing something like this is still a 'feat') was performed by PatRyk on X. They spent two days getting the iPhone software running on an original Switch, and as a reward for their valiant efforts, they ended up with a device that took forever to boot up, couldn't load apps, and promptly threw a kernel panic at the sight of any stress. But it's interesting, at least.

In a follow-up post, PatRyk explains that they only managed to get this done thanks to one GitHub project called QEMUAppleSilicon. If you feel inspired enough to give this a go yourself, hopefully, that will give you everything you need to turn your Switch into a terrible iPhone. How do you even make calls with it, anyway?

If you're not keen on this idea (good on you) but you'd still like to make your older console feel new once again, why not try getting a cool accessory for it? We recently checked out these budget-friendly Hori Joy-Con replacements that make the original Switch's controllers feel like a delight to hold. And if you haven't made the jump just yet, be sure to read up on our Switch 2 review from one of our Nintendo-loving editors. They gave it a solid 9/10, citing improved Switch backlog performance and a more premium build as positives.
